On behalf of Dr. David Rutstein, Vice President for Medical Affairs of United Family Healthcare (UFH) and former Deputy Surgeon General of the United States, it is an honor to invite you to attend our training on The Art of Medicine – Communication in Medical English. This one-day workshop is taught by English speaking physicians and healthcare providers from UFH, who are experienced in training medical personnel. The workshop provides an opportunity for you to be immersed in a unique environment for learning and practicing medical English. The instructors will share techniques for communicating with English speaking patients and healthcare professionals, which may cover the following topics:

  • The art of communication with colleagues
  • The art of medical documentation
  • The art of medical terminology
  • Doctor-patient demonstration/ role play
  • Tour of the hospital

Biographies of Instructors

David RUTSTEIN

MD, MPH

David Rutstein is the Vice President for Medical Affairs for United Family Healthcare. As such, he is responsible for leading and developing the medical staff throughout the United Family Healthcare (UFH) system. As a senior health executive, public health expert and clinician, he has created and led innovative clinical, administrative, management, emergency response and executive level teams and organizations during a 24 year career in the United States government.

Prior to joining UFH in 2011, Dr. Rutstein retired from the United States government where he held the rank of Rear Admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service and served as the Deputy Surgeon General of the United States.

Dr. Rutstein received his medical degree from Brown University, his Master of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has received numerous honors and awards from both the public and private sectors.

Masoud AFNAN

MBBS, FRCOG

Dr. Masoud Afnan graduated from Charing Cross Hospital Medical School at the University of London in England and has 30 years of professional experience as an obstetrician and gynecologist, having held clinical, academic, and administrative positions.

Dr. Afnan has extensive experience in general obstetrics and gynecology, specializing in infertility and assisted conception. He has made numerous contributions to the British Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RCOG), the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority (HFEA), and the British Fertility Society. Dr. Afnan has written over 60 publications and 10 book chapters and is actively involved in research and development programs in the field of infertility.

Dr. Afnan developed the assisted conception unit (ACU) at the Birmingham Women’s Hospital, which has enjoyed consistently above average pregnancy rates. He also led the development of selective salpingography, a simple outpatient technique for overcoming blocked tubes. His current research area is in reproductive endocrinology.

More recently, Dr. Afnan has worked as the Clinical Director for Gynecology at the Birmingham Women’s Hospital. He has been the chair of many committees and programs — including the training committee of the British Fertility Society — and he was the supervisor for an RCOG-accredited subspecialist training program in reproductive medicine.

Maher ELDADAH

MD, MBA

Dr. Maher Eldadah completed his undergraduate medical education at Alexandria School of Medicine in Egypt, and earned an MBA from the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. He completed his pediatric residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey.

Dr. Eldadah obtained more advanced training in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the University of Southern California

Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, California. He then established his own private practice specializing in pediatric intensive care (PICU) as well as consulting services. Before joining BJU Dr. Eldadah served as an intensivist and hospitalist at several U.S. hospitals, including Sutter Medical Center in California, Mcleod Regional Medical Center in South Carolina and Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Florida.

Aside from his clinical practice, Dr. Eldadah participated as a medical volunteer with several charitable organizations such as the International Children’s Heart Foundation and Operation Smile. He is also a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and is certified in BCLS, PALS, NRP. He is also certified as a PALS and NRP instructor. He has been given multiple research grants and has published more than 10 articles in medical journals.

Evelyn FANG

MD, MPH

Dr. Evelyn Fang completed her residency in Family Practice and Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco-Fresno (UCSF-Fresno). She is double-boarded in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine. Dr. Fang worked at BJU from 2005 to 2009 in the primary care setting and hospital services, including the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). After leaving Beijing, she worked as the Service Director of the Internal Medicine Hospitalist Department at the Alaska Native Medical Center from 2010 to 2012. In June 2012, Dr. Fang returned to Beijing to re-join the Family Medicine Department and assumed the role of Director for the United Family Healthcare Center for Primary Care Education and Practice. She is a certified instructor in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS).

Setsuko HOSODA

MD, MPH

Dr. Setsuko Hosoda is a board-certified family physician with a special interest in Mind-Body Medicine and integrative medicine. Prior to her arrival in Beijing, she was an assistant clinical professor at the Swedish Cherry Hill Family Medicine Residency (affiliated with the University of Washington), in Seattle.

Dr. Hosoda spent her high school years in Tokyo and is a graduate of the American School in Japan. She received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and her medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Hosoda has a Master of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health. She completed her residency at Providence Family Practice in Seattle.

Her practice cares for the full spectrum of patients, from infants to adults, and includes care regarding women’s health and adult internal medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and of the Society of Teachers in Family Medicine.

Xiaoxue HUANG

MD

Dr. Huang completed her Medical Degree at the Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis in 2007. Dr. Huang later finished her residency training and a research fellowship in General Internal Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle. Before joining Beijing United Family Hospital and Clinics, Dr. Huang worked at Group Health Cooperative and Neighborcare Health in Seattle.

Dr. Huang’s passion is providing tailored primary care with an emphasis on preventative measures. She also specializes in the strategic and long-term management of chronic illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes. Dr. Huang is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Derick LAU

MD, PhD

Dr. Derick Lau obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree and a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree in Pharmacology/Toxicology from the University of California, Davis (UC Davis). He received a degree in medicine (M.D.) from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of California and a fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology/Medical Oncology at Stanford University.

He was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Oncology/Hematology at the UC Davis, school of Medicine and was subsequently promoted to the position of Professor (1991-2010). While at UC Davis, he served as the Associate Director of the Hematology & Oncology Fellowship Training Program, Vice-Chair of the UC Davis Institutional Review Board (IRB), and the Chair of the Quality Assurance Committee at the UC Davis Cancer Center Clinical Trials Unit. He now is an emeritus professor of medicine at UC Davis.

Dr. Lau has devoted over 20 years to basic and clinical cancer research. He has published numerous scientific papers on cancer biology and treatment.

Hao LU

MPharm

Mr. Hao Lu graduated from the University of Cardiff (U.K.) in 2008. He was working for the National Health Service in the U.K.

before he returned to China in 2011. Mr. Lu has extensive experience in clinical pharmacy, especially in cancer-related pharmacy services. He currently works at BJU with the hospitalist team caring for the hospital’s inpatients. He is especially interested in developing patient-centered pharmaceutical services. Mr. Lu is a registered pharmacist in the U.K.

Sahba MAANI

MD, FCCP

Dr. Maani earned his medical degree from Ohio State University, is board certified in medicine, and completed a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson, Arizona.

Dr. Maani has over 30 years of experience in internal, pulmonary (respiratory), and critical care medicine. He also has extensive training in the field of integrative medicine, with additional training in Ayurvedic medicine (the ancient healing of India) and in functional medicine.

He specializes in asthma, emphysema (COPD), cough, bronchiectasis, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, shortness of breath, and lung nodules.

Previously, he served as Director of Respiratory Medicine at Cornerstone Hospital in Tuscon, Arizona, and he has served as part of the faculty of Clinical Medicine at the Midwestern University of Arizona since 2000.

Dr. Maani sees both adult patients and young children with asthma.

Andrew PERRETT

MB, BChir, MRCGP

Dr. Andrew Perrett graduated with his medical degree from Queens’ College, University of Cambridge in England in 1993. He is a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners and holds a diploma from the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Faculty of Family Planning. Dr. Perrett is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and has particular interest in Pediatrics and palliative care.

Andy WANG

MD

Dr. Andy Wang received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Washington and completed his residency training at Group Health Cooperative in Seattle, Washington.

Dr. Wang is a board-certified family physician who divided his time between HMO and community health centers for five years before coming to China and joining BJU in 2006. Dr. Wang’s clinical focus includes diabetic care, psychiatry, geriatrics, and cross-cultural medicine. He also enjoys taking care of pediatric patients of all ages. During his spare time, Dr. Wang enjoys playing tennis and watching his two sons play soccer.

Elisabeth BRUN

MBBS, BSc

Dr. Elisabeth Brun received her BSc. (Hons) and MBBS from Imperial College School of Medicine in the United Kingdom. As an anesthetic specialist with over 10 years of experience, she has worked at numerous prestigious hospitals throughout the UK and Sweden. Her anesthetic training includes general surgery, urology, pediatrics, ENT, OB/GYN, ophthalmology, orthopedics, vascular surgery, and transplant surgery. Dr. Brun is a Fellow of the Royal College of Anesthesia.

Ashwin DESHMUKH

MD

Dr. Ashwin Deshmukh is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Medical School. He did his surgical internship at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and his orthopedic surgery training at the Harvard Combined Orthopedics Program. From 2001 to 2011, Dr. Deshmukh was a partner physician at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center. He has won numerous international awards for his research in orthopedic surgery. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and an active member of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Hau LIU

MD, MPH, MHSR

Dr. Hau Liu received his medical degree from Columbia University in New York City. He also obtained a Master of Public Health and Master of Business Administration from the same institution, as well as a Master of Health Service Research from Stanford University in California. He received his Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies from Harvard University.

Dr. Hau completed his residency and fellowship at Stanford University Hospital. Most recently, he served as Senior Director at Castlight Health and Staff Endocrinologist in Santa Clara Valley Medical Center’s Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, both in California. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine (Aff.) and an Adjunct Associate at the Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research, both at Stanford University. He also worked previously at Kaiser-Permanente, the Palo Alto Medical Foundation and as a management consultant at Booz Allen and Hamilton.

He is double board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and Metabolism. He has also received Thyroid Ultrasound and FNA Biopsy Accreditation from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology and Bone Mass Measurement Certification from the International Society for Clinical Densitometry.

Ashish MASKAY

MD, MBBS

Dr. Ashish Maskay received a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Medical Degree (MD) from Chittagong Medical College in Bangladesh. After completing his internship in surgery, he worked for nearly two years at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in the Department of Surgery. He was then selected to study for a Master’s program, specializing in General Surgery at Huashan Hospital (affiliated with Fudan University).

Dr. Maskay has experience with healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, Nepal, Bangladesh, and China, and has many years of surgical clinical experience especially within ER settings.

Shannon MOFFETT

MD

Dr. Moffett received her medical degree from Stanford University in the United States and completed her residency at Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland, California. She is licensed in the state of California and certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Dr. Moffett is also a member of the Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association (EMRA) and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

Yuhong SHE

MD

Dr. She Yuhong, a graduate of Columbia University in New York City, is an American Board-Certified obstetrician and gynecologist, a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and a member of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.

Dr. She worked in the United States for the past 20 years, most recently as an Attending Physician at Tufts Medical Center and Clinical Assistant Professor at the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology of Tufts University in Boston. She completed her Obstetrics & Gynecology residency training at Long Island College Hospital of State University of New York Down State School of Medicine in New York City and Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. Dr. She received her medical degree from College of Medicine at Soochow University, and also obtained a Master’s degree of Biostatistics in Clinical Research from Columbia University.

Dr. She currently holds medical licenses in the states of both Massachusetts and New York in the U.S. Her clinical interests include, but are not limited to, abnormal uterine bleeding, vaginal and vulvar disorders, cervical dysplasia, pelvic pain, ovarian and tubal diseases, endometriosis, fibroids, and contraception and menopausal disorders. She is experienced in performing minimally invasive surgery of gynecology such as hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, various vulvar and vaginal surgery. Dr. She is also a credentialed clinical proctor for robotic surgery in the U.S.
